EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA
The new GCSE History course has been designed to give you a broader spectrum of historical knowledge and understanding. The topics now on offer combine the best elements of the previous GCSE course, and some new and exciting ones never offered before. There is a strong emphasis on historical skills, which will develop your critical thinking and analytical abilities, as well as your extended writing, all of which are highly valued by Sixth Form, employers and universities. The course allows you to investigate issues such as conflict, society, change over time and historically significant sites, amongst a wide range of other things.
MATERIAL STUDIED ON THE COURSE
GCSE history will suit you if you wish to understand more of our world today, and understand more about the world in which you live.
The course comprises of two units, each of which constitutes 50% of your overall grade. Please note, there is no longer a coursework element, and all assessment is done through written examination. History is an academically challenging subject, and you will be expected to undertake extended written tasks, reading of academic texts and evaluation of historical sources and interpretations on a regular basis.
Unit 1 – 50% examination
Understanding the Modern World
Students will study either:
Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship and Conflict and tension between East and West, 1945–1972
Or
America, 1920–1973: Opportunity and inequality and Conflict and tension in Asia, 1950–1975
Unit 2 – 50% examination
Shaping the Nation
Students will study either:
Britain: Health and the people: c1000 to the present day and Restoration England, 1660–1685
Or
Britain: Power and the people: c1170 to the present day and Norman England, c1066–c1100
